Weight Loss from Pilates– Can It Be Real?

Many people join group Pilates sessions in the hope of losing weight and get a slender physique like a dancer. The question is “can it be realistic? Can Pilates really serve as the diet pill that some people think it is? Well, the basic Pilates exercises are meant for core strengthening and cannot facilitate fat burning unless you take it to the advanced levels. In simple words, blending aerobics with Pilates can help in achieving weight loss.

However, the Pilates performer must be more realistic. If you join a Pilates session in the hope that it can help you lose 60 pounds of weight and get a rock hard bum, then that’s just dreaming with open eyes. For most people Pilates exercises are just a fad or misinterpretation. They have weight loss on their mind but Pilates produces a sculpting effect without changing the body weight.

Losing weight with Pilates

Just burn more calories than you consume and it will keep you tight. There is one thing for sure, weight is directly associated with calorie intake. If you wish to burn more calories than you take, it’s important to know the number of calories utilized in exercise. Even after an intensive hour of Pilates, the number of calorie consumption is not that big.

Con the contrary, aerobics, cycling and other sports can help you burn calories but then they are not as good for body sculpting. Hence doing only Pilates will leave a gap and achieving weight loss becomes difficult.

Comparing Pilates with other weight loss exercises

A comparison of Pilates with a list of general exercises elucidates that the calories burnt are just midway between extreme exercises like running and walking. Losing weight with Pilates is achievable to some extent. The only problem starts when people do it for the sole reason of losing weight. If you wish to see a lesser number every time you step on that weighing machine, then I would suggest trying other exercises for weight loss.

The actual idea of fitness is to trim the fat and strengthen the muscles such that they get well-toned. Overall weight loss could also mean loss of lean muscles. I would conclude on the note that weight loss with Pilates is achievable but not the way most people want it. If you are too desperate to lose tons of weight, I suggest trying other exercises.

Shaping the Body with Resistance Band Pilates Exercises

When Pilates was introduced, resistance bands were not used in exercises. This modification came into practice in recent years to enhance the experience of stretching movements. These bands play a role in strengthening the core by providing resistance so that the performer generates required force to take a position.
  • Pilates exercises with bands
The right choice of bands is an important consideration before taking up Pilates exercises. However, the ribbon-like tubing band is the most likely choice since it aides in coordinated movements and improves flexibility of muscles. Resistance band exercises can help tone both the upper and the lower body. Read on for Pilates band exercises for sculpting specific body parts
  • Frog exercise for Shoulder
The performer has to lie on the back while bringing the knees towards the chest. The band has to be wrapped on the feet and the other end should go beneath you right beneath the shoulder and chest region. Balance your shoulders on the band while force is exerted to take them to a taut position. The arms placed inside the loop of the band will also be shaped in this way.
  • The hundred exercise for Back
All traditional back exercises of Pilates will gain more momentum when resistance band is used. It will provide uniform strength to the muscles of back and core. At one end, the band has to be supported with the feet while the other end will go on your back. During Pilates moves, the strain can be felt in the back and abdomen region. This exercise is performed while lying on your back and the exercise is also good for arm sculpting.
  • Pilates exercise for Abdomen
The best exercise for the lower body is cycling or paddling. Pilates band will offer the resistance of paddles and this will immensely help in building lower body posture. Most of the Pilates exercises for abs are centered around strengthening the core for correct posture. In this case, the resistance band will come in contact with the lower body.  While the performer lies on the back, the upper body must be slightly lifted from the ground and hands must be used to support the head. When the legs are switched, the upper body must rotate in the direction where you rotate. Since this exercise involves hand movement, it’s good for the biceps muscles as well.
  • Stretches for legs
All exercises aimed for lower body can strengthen legs, thighs and pelvis region. In Pilates exercise for legs, the performer must lie on his back and one end of the band is supported by feet while keeping the legs outstretched. Try not to bend the knees and maintain the tautness of the band by pulling it with your hands. Hold your breath and count seconds in your head and continue the same exercise with the other leg. Since the legs are lifted and rotated like in paddling, it is good for legs as well pelvis region.

Pilates workout with resistance bands is an excellent exercise routine for people of all ages.

Osteoporosis Do’s and Don’ts– How Core Pilates Exercises Can Prevent Bone Thinning

Some core exercises and Pilate workout can help in the maintenance of bone density but then there is a long-term routine that exerts pressure on bones. Whatever bone strength you have developed will be lost when exercise is discontinued. The rule of thumb indicates that you should never stop Pilates. However, there are certain rules that will help you retain the benefits of Pilates exercises.

  • The Dos

Continue with weight bearing exercises on feet rather than plow in yoga or other exercises that exert pressure on the spine. When a Pilates performer susceptible to osteoporosis, rolls on her back, there is a greater risk of fractures. However the exercises in which your feet bear the weight are ideal for strengthening the core.

Work on your balance more often and dig out Pilates exercises that help you achieve that. Women prone to osteoporosis will realize that falling can lead to hip or wrist fractures. Standing Pilates exercises have proven to help in maintaining balance.

If you ever opt for cardiovascular or resistances training make sure it’s conducted with all safety features in place.

Sit and stand with support for your back. In some extreme cases, even sneezing hard or coughing can lead to critical fractures. The best way to minimize that possibility is by sitting or standing against something for support.

  • The Donts

Try not to flex your spine forward. The patients with the possibility of osteoporosis can have great problems with balance if they make this a habit

Never bend over to pick something off the floor and prevent rolling around on your spine. Spinal flexion is good for younger bones. But when you have thinning bones, some spinal moves are completely contradictory.

Avoid doing crunches or sit ups but there are some abdominal strengthening alternatives in the world of Pilates.

Avoid flexion of leg to the side and stay away from extreme flexion exercises. For a patient of osteoporosis, some exercises do more harm than good.

3 Extraordinary Moves With Pilates Ring

The addition of the Pilates ring to a workout will remind you what good workouts really look like. It takes a plain Pilates session to the next level and perhaps this is why it is referred to as the magic circle. This light device is made of flexible rubber mounted over high quality metal with a standard diameter of 12 to 14 inches. Its not hard to squeeze but the mild resistance from the Pilates ring makes it an excellent exercise gear.

The best part is that this portable ring can be carried along and helps you exercise various muscle groups. Mentioned below are some toning exercises that can give great results when performed with a Pilates magic circle.

Hands behind the back

Start off by standing straight while keeping your heels together. Take a deep breath and engage the core. Place the circle behind the back while holding it with both hands. Keep the palms open and fingers pointed as you start to take the position. Move the magic circle  down while counting to 10 as you exhale. The triceps and back muscles will be toned from this exercise.

Straight arm yoga

This one also requires the performer to stand straight while keeping the abs tightened. Hold the circle directly in front of the chest at arm’s length. Keep the palms open and fingers pointing straight ahead as you hold the magic wheel between the palms. Move the circle slowly above your head while counting to 10 and lower it to the same starting position during exhaling. Repeat this routine at least five times. The muscles used in this exercise are those of the arms, back, core and the chest.

Leg presses

The starting position for this exercise is lying on the left side while resting the upper body weight on the elbow. Keep your legs straight and place the circle between them. Extend the legs such that the toes point outwards. Keep the hips firmly on the ground but slightly raise the ribs region to engage the core. Inhale and squeeze the magic circle. Count to 10, release the circle and exhale

Interesting Myths about Pilates

Personally, I am a big fan of Pilates or anything else that makes you feel fit and spend a healthier lifestyle. However, I just can’t stand the fact that there are various misconceptions associated with Pilates. Here are some common myths about Pilates we come across every day.
If I ask Madonna and Lebron James have in common, many people might say its fame. But there is something more. Both do Pilates. Some of the readers might have an eyebrow raised with the mention of Lebron James here which brings us to our first popular myth.

Myth #1: Pilates is for the women

Since Pilates is known to strengthen the muscles of pelvis and lower abdomen, it is believed to be a type of exercise only for the females. Moreover, there are no heavy weight lifting and muscle building in Pilates which is yet another reason why it is perceived as a women only activity. But let’s face the truth. The inventor of this form of exercise was a man. Secondly, many athletes use Pilates exercises along with cardio and weight training. Though men rarely take gym classes for Pilates, it does not mean that Pilates is only for the females.

Myth #2: Pilates is done for losing weight

Every exercise causes loss of calories but that does not mean that it’s meant for weight loss. According to some studies, Pilates workouts are not effective in adult females for weight loss. Most of these exercises are meant to improve core strength. However, Pilates can be used in combination with other exercises to lose weight but doing these exercises for the sole purpose of losing weight is pointless. For instance running on a treadmill along with some Pilates exercises will help you get in shape.

Myth #3: Pilates can be performed only with special machines

There are different types of Pilates and there is one form that requires the use of machines. The Cadillac, Wunda chair and the Reformer has become the signature of Pilates. But there is more to this form of exercise than those strange looking contraptions, pulleys, straps and springs. If you don’t have access to any Pilates machines, you can still do around 500 Pilates exercises with a simple mat.

Myth #4: Pilates makes you stronger

Most definitely, after a Pilates workout, you will feel better control and improved balance but that does not mean that you can get stronger overall. Pilates is aimed for abdominal muscle endurance and flexibility of bones. And folks, there is a world of difference between endurance and strength. If you are not training for weight lifting, you cannot have strength to lift much weight just by doing Pilates. But you see common sense is not so common. People associate different myths and continue to believe in that.

Golf Games and Pilates Fitness

When you are learning and practicing golf, it takes a while to get past the beginning levels of the game. Not everyone can master the skill to take a shot off the tee past the fairway and to the putt after a few games. Your level of fitness has a fair amount of role in this. Players of elite sports such as golf are always particular about adding Pilates sessions in their fitness regimen.

However, once that happens, the competitive nature of golfers starts to emerge. If you have been playing the game in foursome, you may now want to compete with the members of your group. Although golf comprises of the general 18-hole round, there are multiple different games that have a competitive edge while some of them can be personalized.

Scramble

Scramble is one of the favorites among golfers from around the world which explains why most of the golf tournaments and competitions use this format. If you have fun at golf as a loner, scramble is not the right type of game for you. It’s a team game played with a strategy where you have a better chance of scoring..

The format of this type of golf is pretty simple. First, everyone is allowed a shot and the place where the ball from the best shot lands is where everyone continues. The format continues until the ball makes its ground into the cup. Scramble is most fun when played with four partners but that is not a rule. You can have scramble between two or three persons. Besides that, the golfers are not compelled to commence the game from the best shot. You can improvise and play from the poor shot of one of your friend and that’s perfectly fine.

Best Ball

Best ball is another addition to golf where the match commences with the selection of the better ball of the two players in the game of three players. All the different sorts of golf playing are often referred with best ball. In the world of golf, this game comes out as an enduring challenge for players having different levels of skill. Pilates works wonders in this regard to support the spine against the stress from stroke playing.

Best ball contest is usually held between teams and the score of the team that gets noted is the lowest score of any team member on that hole. Finally, the team with the lowest score emerges as the winner.
